SAINTS ROUNDUP: Covey fires Saints to another victory

The St. Helena High softball team posted a solid 6-4 win over St. Vincent in eight innings on Tuesday.
Saints senior ace Arica Covey threw a complete-game four-hitter, striking out four and walking five as the club improved to 8-7-1 overall and 2-1 in the NCL I South.
The Saints also rapped out 10 hits as Alice Plant, Alicia Regusci, Desirae Skadal and Mollie Sallinger recorded two apiece. Liz Hardin and Kate Duarte added a hit apiece in the win.
Varsity Baseball
• Saints drop two
Visiting Cloverdale High stormed back from a 4-0 deficit to hand St. Helena High’s varsity baseball team a 6-4 loss Friday night.
The Saints scored all of their runs in the first inning but were unable to hold the lead.
Saints starting pitcher senior Wilson Barr took the loss, allowing five runs — just two earned — on 10 hits while striking out two batters and hitting a batter in five-plus inning of work.
Junior Matt Armstrong relieved Barr with nobody out and a runner at third base in the top of the sixth inning. In his two innings of work, Armstrong was touched for a run on two hits while he struck out three.
St. Helena collected six hits — all singles — with Barr, Armstrong, Jake Holguin, Dean Slattery, Allan Rosenbrand and sophomore catcher Cody Dorman having one each.
Saints head coach Kirt Brower added that it was Dorman’s first hit of his varsity career.
Meanwhile, Armstrong, Barr and senior Ryan Smithers each drove in a run against Cloverdale.
The Saints (6-10 overall, 1-3 NCL I South) were held to two hits in Tuesday’s five-inning loss to St. Vincent, 11-1. Smithers and Cody Dorman each posted a hit, while Holguin scored the only run on a leadoff walk, two stolen bases and a Mustang error.
Varsity Golf
• Saints fourth at Windsor
St. Helena High’s golf team posted a fourth-place finish in a league match at Windsor Golf Course last Wednesday after press time.
The Saints’ five-man team of Peter Larson, Sam Anthony, Quinlan Roche, Elliot Carson and Cody Meuter carded a 480. Larson fired a team-low 84, Anthony carded an 85 and Roche posted a 101.
Carson and Meuter each added a 105. Alec Wittschiebe posted a non-scoring 112 for the Saints.
Kelseyville won with a 413, St. Vincent finished at 432 and Middletown was third at 466.
St. Helena was followed by Tomales at 524, Calistoga with a 532 and Rincon Valley Christian turning in a scorecard of 534.
Tuesday at Rincon Valley Christian, St. Helena posted a third-place 460 behind Kelseyville (407) and Middletown (434). Larson (86), Anthony (91), Wittschiebe (92), Roche (93) and Meuter (98) were the top five scorers for the Saints.
Overall on the season, Kelseyville won the league title at 48-0, followed by St. Vincent (38-10), Middletown (28-20) and St. Helena (27-21).
Varsity Tennis
• Saints wrap up season
St. Helena High’s tennis team capped its season with a convincing 4-1 win over host Tomales High last Thursday. The win improved the Saints’ final overall record to 6-3 and their Coastal Mountain Conference mark to 5-2.
The Saints won all three singles matches in straight sets. Senior Jonathan Shifflett defeated Tomales’ Sean Cochrane 6-1, 6-0.
Junior Caitlin Walter blanked Chelsea Bowman 6-0, 6-0, and freshman Luke Walter, who was making his debut in singles, topped Garrett Howze 6-1, 6-2.
Meanwhile, the Saints’ doubles team of Haley Mannix and Devon Schmidt also won in straight sets, defeating Brian Hollern 7-5, 6-4. Jodie Mazzucchi and Paloma Strozzi- Heckler accounted for the Braves’ lone match victory, outlasting the young team of Kenzie Fetzer and Katie Conover in three sets 6-7, (7-4), 6-4, 6-4.
In their final home match of the season, the Saints bowed 4-1 to visiting St. Vincent last Wednesday after press time.
The duo of Ferrell and Luke Walter accounted for St. Helena’s lone victory, defeating Morgan Thompson and Sage Conlon in straight sets 7-6, (8-6), 6-2.
Track and Field
• Saints strong at Cloverdale
St. Helena High’s track team posted an impressive second-place finish in a league meet at Cloverdale High last Wednesday at press time.
Wednesday’s meet marked the first time all season the team had complete relay teams in both the boys and girls 4 x 100- and 4x 400-meter races.
The Saints won three of the four relay races.
In the JV boys 4 X100, Jake Elliott, Justin Bell, Tim Rallis and Campbell Smith took home first place with a time of 52.3.
The Saints also took home first place in the girls 4 x100 as Lauren Hale, Kendall Shifflett, Ruby Molinari and Lizzie Poisson posted a time of 58.3.
Meanwhile, the Saints won the girls 4 x 400 relay when the team of Lia Vosti, Claire Wilson, Ruby Molinari and Poisson came home in 4:47.
Senior Brian Cole won the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:53.
Fellow senior Tony Montelli won three individual events — the discus (109-9), the shot put and the high jump.
Poisson won both the girls 400-meter run (1:08. 7) and the girls 800 (2:43.1).
Shifflett won the girls 100 (13.8). Smith won the boys 400 (1:01.8), while Bell took home top honors in the long jump (17-1) and the varsity boys hurdles (20.7), while Rallis captured the JV crown (20.7).
On Wednesday after press time, the Saints were scheduled to host their first home meet of the season.
Junior Varsity Baseball
• Saints drop two games
Visiting Cloverdale High cruised to an 8-2 lead and then held on for a 10-5 win over St. Helena High’s JV baseball team on Friday afternoon.
Saints starting pitcher Jeff Quirici went three innings and got a no-decision, allowing three runs — one earned — on five hits. He issued three walks.
Luis Lopez replaced Quirici on the mound before the top of the fourth inning and ultimately took the loss in his 11⁄3 innings of work.
Lopez was charged with three runs on one hit while issuing five walks.
Colton Dorman succeeded Lopez on the mound and was touched for four runs on five hits in his 22⁄3 innings of work.
John Densberger, Lopez, and Colton Dorman had two hits, while Jeff Quirici and Ian Van Keuren added one hit each.
Lopez also drove in two runs while Densberger, Van Keuren and Will Smithers each had an RBI.
• St. Vincent 12, St. Helena 0
The Saints got a single by Will Smithers in their loss on Tuesday. The Saints are now 5-11 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Junior Varsity Softball
• Saints canceled on Tuesday
The Saints’ game against St. Vincent High was canceled on Tuesday night.
In their last game, April 24, the Saints improved to 8-4 with a 16-12 victory over Middletown High.
Saints starting pitcher Reagan Blackwood (5-3) went six strong innings and got the win against Middletown.
